 How Long Does Menopause Last?

You likely know that menopause is a perfectly normal part of aging for women. However, the details of that experience may not be known by even people who experience it before entering this phase of womanhood. So, what is the typical length of menopause? Read on to learn about the length of menopause, so you can be prepared.

How Long Does Menopause Typically Last?

In general, menopause often begins between the ages of 45 and 55.  Before you start menopause, there is a period known as perimenopause. During that time, common symptoms include hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Perimenopause can last for up to 10 years.

You have officially reached menopause once you have not had a period for 12 months. At that point, you will enter the postmenopausal stage. It is at this point that you should experience a reduction in symptoms you may have experienced in perimenopause.

What Affects the Length of Menopause?

The exact length of perimenopause can vary significantly. However, menopause is the time at which twelve consecutive months without a cycle have passed. So, the actual length of menopause varies for each individual.

A few factors can affect how long these experiences last. One of the biggest variables to consider is genetics. Look to previous generations to get an idea of what your menopause experience may be like.

Variables such as diet, stress level, lifestyle, and overall health can all affect how long menopause lasts. You can also predict that you may have earlier menopause if you have higher estradiol and follicle-stimulating hormone levels or if you have previously experienced irregular menstrual periods.
