How Long Does Menopause Last?

 How Long Does Menopause Last?

As you begin experiencing the early symptoms of menopause, you may be wondering how long does menopause last?  Menopause is the time 12 months after a woman’s last period.  The menopausal transition can last seven to fourteen years.  This is impacted by a variety of factors including smoking, age of onset, and race and ethnicity. Menopause is a natural part of aging and marks the end of reproductive years.

How Do I Know If I’m In Menopause?

Perimenopause is the time when your body begins transitioning into menopause and is brought on by changing levels of hormones. Changing levels of estrogen and progesterone cause your reproductive cycle to slow down and prepare to stop.  Common symptoms may include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, insomnia, and increased irritability.

What Are The 3 Stages of Menopause?

To know how long menopause will last, you should understand the 3 stages.

The first stage is perimenopause.

During perimenopause, your cycles may become irregular, but have not yet stopped.  Most women begin to experience this around age 47.

The second stage is menopause.

This begins when you have your final menstrual period.

And finally, you will experience postmenopause.

This stage begins 12 months after your final period and continues for the rest of your life.

What Are The Signs Menopause Is Coming To An End?

During postmenopause you will begin to experience a decrease in symptoms such as hot flashes and will not have had a period for 12 months.  It’s important to continue regular medical care because you are at an increased risk for certain health conditions such as osteoporosis and heart disease.
